The Department of Corneal Disease

The Department of Corneal and ocular surface of Tianjin Eye Hospital was set up in the late 1970s. Our hospital was one of the earliest hospitals which started the basic and clinical research of corneal diseases in China. In 1970s, we successfully developed the hydrophilic soft contact lens, which won the second grade sic-tech achievements prize of the Ministry of Health.

The doctors of the corneal department are committed to treating all kinds of ocular surface diseases, including dry eyes, blepharitis, a variety of conjunctivitis, pterygium, conjunctival and corneal tumors, corneal diseases caused by a variety of reasons, including all kind of infectious keratitis, corneal dystrophy, and corneal degeneration. Etiology diagnosis can be done, including bacteria, fungi and acanthamoeba. They all have extensive experiences in the treatment of infectious keratitis, especially in fungal keratitis and viral keratitis, and many patients were cured without surgery. Tianjin eye bank is in our hospital. Patients who need lamellar or penetrating keratoplasty can undergo surgery in our hospital. New surgical approach of pterygium excision combined with autologous limbal-conjunctival graft is underwent in pterygium treatment, which make pterygium recurrence rate decreased to 5%. The application of lip mucous membrane and amniotic membrane transplantation is also undergone in our department to treat acute and chronic chemical eye burn injuries, which can improve the cure rate. The examinations of cornea and ocular surface in our hospital are complete. The non-invasively examination of cornea can be done by in vivo confocal microscopy. With the growing number of patients with dry eye, our introduction of the most advanced non-invasive dry eye examination equipment can meet the diagnostic needs of the majority of patients with dry eye, and for patients of meibomian gland dysfunction, we undergo the treatment of meibomian gland disease and achieved good results. Our hospital also introduced the corneal collagen cross-linking technology, which can provided a new approach to the majority of patients with corneal disease, especially to the patients with keratoconus and corneal ulcer.

Over the past 40 years, a large number of professionals were introduced in our department. At present, there were three chief physicians, two associate chief physicians and two attending doctors in our department, who have a strong research capability and rich clinical experience.(2016.7)
